At last we got to show our Philly R&B roots on this song!
We probably should have done more R&B ... but impetuous youths gotta rock! Funny ... Back when we recorded this
album, people at RCA were annoyed that we had so many different styles on the album ... rock, pop, R&B, ballads, jazz-rock
('Stephen') and even country-rock ('The Ballad of Joey Small'). They told us: 'We won't know which
section to put you in, in the record stores!' Well ... the times changed. Eventually, the record stores combined
everything into one big 'pop' section ... and now ... there are no record stores! We are finally living in a
time when every song is taken individually on its own merits. Yay!
Another funny vocal spar with RCA: We said: 'The Beatles did a vast assortment of styles on the White Album!'
Can you guess what they told us? Of course: 'When you're the Beatles, you can do that too.' Ob-la-di,
Ob-la-da.
