My fault, you knew it was my fault
Baby you knew it was my fault
You knew it was my fault
Baby you knew it

It's always me who slams the door
I always broke your heart
Right from the start
But baby I was wrong, 'cause it was ...

My fault, you knew it was my fault
Baby you knew it was my fault
You knew it was my fault
Baby you knew it

For all those times I've done you wrong
My heart is twice its size
Look in my eyes
'Cause I'm just not that strong

It's always me who's making war
Babe, I wanna call a truce
So cut me loose
And love me like before

You knew it was my fault
You knew it was my fault
Baby you knew it was my fault
You knew it was my fault
Baby you knew it

ABOUT THE SONG

There are a couple of cool things about this song:

First of all ... Just like the Sunrise album, my favorite song on this Serenade album is one I didn't write: My Fault.  It was going to be the single.  It's clearly the 'pop-iest.'  And I am enthralled with the Mellotron string solo, tubular bells and castanets.  And the two key changes!

Perhaps more noteworthy is the way this song set up a great moment in the recording of the Serenade album.  We were in Cherokee's Studio A on a Saturday, ready to cut some basic tracks (drums, bass, acoustic piano and electric guitar).  This song, My Fault, hit the tape in one take.  Simple.  Easy.  The next song ... not so much.  Hollywood Freeway was a fast rocker that had us all playing at the edge of our abilities ... and take after take found one of us messing up something.  We went at it for about 5 hours.  After that insanity, our producer Richie Wise snapped.  He grabbed all the pencils from a cup by the console, snapped them in two and threw them in the air.  Then ... He went into the iso booth adjacent to the control room, shut the door, laid on the floor ... and screamed at the top of his lungs for what seemed like ten minutes non-stop (probably more like two).  The scream was muffled through the sound-proof door ... just the faintest little sound of a tortured soul in great pain.  It was hysterical!  I'll never forget that!  And it was all that much more intense having been set up by the easy, one-take My Fault.
