Looking back I guess it was the best I've ever had
Rolling brooks, mountain highways ... did I need much more than that?
Carriages and treasures ... how they took away my sight
Now I'd give half of my senses for some Colorado light tonight

I should have stayed where I felt younger
And my dreams were never bad
Watching stars turn into diamonds right within your hand
Never knew I had it easy
What it was to be sad
Be my Colorado Summer ... it's the best I've ever had

Rolling back to whitewashed fences and open cattleground
Colorado keeps your secrets even when you never tell
Where the twilight is a warning for a million fireflies
Coming down by way of heaven to lighten up your eyes tonight

I should have stayed where I felt younger
And my dreams were never bad
Watching stars turn into diamonds right within your hand
Never knew I had it easy
What it was to be sad
Be my Colorado Summer ... it's the best I've ever had

ABOUT THE SONG

There are a couple good stories about Colorado Summer too:

This was definitely one of the songs Michael & I wrote during the Canoga Park Band House Staff Songwriter game.  We wrote about 30 songs in 3-4 weeks ... some were great, some were average, some were stinkers.  This was one of the best!

At one point, someone asked us: 'Are you sure there are fireflies in Colorado?' (They're mentioned in the song).  Well ... We weren't sure.  But we have asked ... and they are indeed there.  This sounds silly ... but I once worked on a movie that was set in San Francisco.  The director and picture editor were from SF and said: 'Don't put crickets in the night scenes ... There are no crickets in San Francisco.'  What?  Apparently not.  Isn't that odd?  Something to do with the climate and the salt air or something.

But here's my favorite Colorado Summer story:  Many years ago (around the time fire was discovered), I took a recording engineering course at the University of Sound Arts in Hollywood.  Each week we had two nights in a studio to get our hands-on experience (the rest was classroom work) and we concentrated on different things ... drums one night, guitars another, etc.  On the night when we were to focus on the piano, I volunteered to play so the rest of the class could mess with mics and EQ.  I went out to the piano, which was sideways near the window to the control room, and I played my most heartfelt version of Colorado Summer.  When I was done, I looked into the control room ... the teacher and all 14 of the other students were staring at me ... frozen, with their mouth hanging open.  One of my finest memories  :)
